Palliative Care Support

The purpose of this course is to equip you with the knowledge, skill and competence of a palliative care approach to enable you to care for a person diagnosed with a life-limiting illness in a dignified, inclusive and holistic manner while also offering support to their families.

This course will equip you with the skills to work effectively as part of a healthcare team in order to provide support for a person with a life-limiting illness and their families in a variety of settings. This is attained by exploring key topics, often sensitive topics, such as how to provide holistic care for persons diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and in the last days of a person’s life, how to enhance their quality of life, how to communicate effectively with them and what to expect in their their last days. This course also covers how to offer support to family members and significant others of the deceased or dying, and how to recognise and respect the uniqueness of each person’s approach to death.

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the philosophy and principles of palliative care
  2. Summarise the structure and organisation of palliative care services to include the role played by the multi-disciplinary team and diverse family structures in the provision of care for a terminally ill person
  3. Discuss the role of the support worker in the promotion of key issues such as life quality, self esteem, respect, privacy and dignity in palliative care work
  4. Explore different attitudes to death and dying to include an understanding of individual patterns of grief, bereavement and loss
  5. Employ a range of communication strategies and processes which are central to the work in palliative care
  6. Apply a person-centered approach to caring for a person in the last days of their life to include the provision of supportive and holistic care promoting safety, dignity, respect and comfort
  7. Respond appropriately to the needs of the person who is confused in the last days of life
  8. Work effectively and with great sensitivity in relation to the dying person and their significant others in a palliative care setting
  9. Use the range of skills required from a palliative support worker in relation to end of life care

Elevation Training operates an open admissions policy and welcomes applications from all learners who meet the stated minimum entry requirements for the programme, irrespective of social, cultural and/or educational backgrounds. We communicate in a professional and courteous manner to all those who express an interest in undertaking a programme with us.

All learners entering our programmes are expected to be proficient at reading, researching, understanding, drafting and preparing information, across a broad range of topics. Learners applying to our programmes should have a minimum of a level 4 certificate, or leaving certificate, and/or equivalent qualification. Decisions on admission to a programme are transparent and consistent, and we treat all applicants in a fair and equitable manner.

Applicants who do not meet entry criteria based on previous certified learning achievement may be entitled to be considered based on professional experience, informal or non-formal learning (See Access, Transfer & Progression Policy, ETP 3.03).

Learners, for whom English is not their first language, may be required to provide evidence of their level of English competency. Learners will not be admitted if it is deemed that their level of English proficiency would disadvantage them.

You will be expected to complete a written assignment (weighting 30%) and a reflective learner record (weighting 70%) during self-directed learning time over the duration of the course.
